Athletic Participation Eligibility

Scholastic Standing for a Crete-Monee High School student is reviewed weekly. A report is generated in Skyward weekly on Thursdays at 2:30pm. It is important for teachers to regularly update their online grade book so the weekly report that is generated is accurate.

The IHSA States:

1. You must pass twenty-five (25) credit hours of high school work per week. Generally, twenty-five (25) credit hours is the equivalent of five (5) .5 credit courses (2.5 full credits).

*In summary, student-athletes must pass 5 classes weekly in order to be eligible to participate in the next week of competitions. Students who do not pass 5 classes by the end of the school week will be ineligible to play until the following week.

2. You must have passed and received credit toward graduation for twenty-five (25) credit hours of high school work for the entire previous semester to be eligible at all during the ensuing semester.

*In summary, student-athletes must pass 5 classes at the end of a semester in order to be eligible to for sports the following semester.

Required Participation Forms

Prior to being cleared for athletic participation at Crete-Monee, a student must complete and return the following forms to their coach:

A student CANNOT begin participating with a sport until all the above forms have been completed and returned to the athletic office. Once these forms have been reviewed by the athletic office, acknowledgement will be placed on file that grants administrative approval for the student to begin athletic participation and acknowledges to the coach that all necessary forms are completed and are on file in the athletic office.

Realities of High School Sports

Participation in Crete-Monee’s extracurricular programs is a privilege. We want Crete-Monee Athletics to be a model for other athletic teams and programs to emulate. Coaches and Athletes are expected to exemplify sportsmanship behavior both on and off campus. Academics are a priority, and participation in extracurricular programs should complement a student’s academic schedule and not hinder it.

Crete-Monee students involved in extracurricular activities have fewer behavior infractions, lower truancy rates, and higher grade point averages than the at-large high school student. We praise the academic accomplishments of our student-athletes along with their athletic successes. However, the personal demands of belonging to an athletic team are great. The following are some points to be mindful when joining one of our sports teams:

  1. Vacations should NOT be planned during the playing season.
  2. There are NO guarantees for playing time.
  3. Student-Athletes are expected to be at ALL practices on time (communication with coach)
  4. CMHS provides students-athletes with a cohesive year-round opportunity to train and condition.
  5. Our programs require fundraising efforts to operate.
  6. Expectations and commitment of time becomes greater within higher levels of competition.
  7. FACILITIES: due to the lack of facility space, some practices may begin at 5-AM and some may not end until 9-PM.
  8. Studies and homework are expected to be completed for classes even if a weeknight competition brings teams back to CMHS at late evening hours.

IHSA

Illinois High School Association

The purpose of the Illinois High School Association is to provide leadership for the development, supervision and promotion of good sportsmanship in interscholastic competition and other activities in which its member schools choose to engage. Participation in such interscholastic activities offers eligible students experiences in an educational setting which provide enrichment to the educational experience.

Our Mission Statement

The IHSA governs the equitable participation in interscholastic athletics and activities that enrich the educational experience.

History and People

Founded on December 27, 1900, the Illinois High School Association is a private, not-for-profit organization with more than 800 member high schools in Illinois. The IHSA is headquartered in Bloomington, Illinois, and is not funded by tax dollars or administered by the government in the state of Illinois. The principals who make up the IHSA Board of Directors volunteer their time and energy to serve the IHSA and its member schools. Each Board member represents a geographic division in the state after being nominated and then elected in a vote by other principals in that division. The IHSA staff administers the state tournaments in all IHSA sanctioned activities and sports, including the selection of State Series sites, assignment of officials and on-site state final management. The staff is responsible for the education and enforcement of the by-laws that its member schools vote into existence.

Effecting Change

The rules that govern the setup and scheduling of each state tournament are known as the Terms & Conditions. Every sport and activity has a geographically diverse Advisory Committee that can offer recommendations to change the Terms & Conditions. A committee of Athletic Directors provides feedback on each recommendation to give the Board of Directors feedback from several groups before they cast the deciding vote. Any member school can propose a new by-law or a change to an existing by-law. Those proposals are reviewed by the IHSA Legislative Commission, a 35-person group of Principals and Athletic Directors from around the state. The proposed changes are then reviewed for all IHSA member schools at mandatory Town Hall Meetings held at 28 different high schools throughout the state each November. The Legislative Commissioners then vote on whether each proposal should appear on an all-school ballot based on the feedback of the member schools that attend their Town Hall Meetings.

IHSA.org

The official Web Site contains "everything you'd ever want to know about the IHSA" and then some. It contains pages for every IHSA athletic and non-athletic activity, real time scoring for most state final tournaments, the Officials Department, and many other pages. The IHSA Constitution, By-laws and Board Policies are also on the Web site.
