On May 8, Crete-Monee School District 201-U honored longtime coach, educator, and alumna Sue “Coach G” Giannantonio during a dedication ceremony for the new Crete-Monee High School softball field, now officially named “Coach G” Field.

The dedication recognized Coach G’s 31 years of service as head softball coach at Crete-Monee High School and her lasting impact on generations of students, athletes, and families throughout the school community. A 1975 graduate of Crete-Monee High School, Coach G has remained deeply connected to the district throughout her career as both an educator and coach, remaining committed to giving back to her alma mater.

Coach G served as head softball coach from 1986 to 2017, leading the program to an impressive 530 victories while building a culture centered on teamwork, perseverance, and student success. Her impact extends far beyond the field, as she has shaped the lives of countless student-athletes. Under her guidance, 52 players continued their softball careers at the collegiate level, including several who later became collegiate head softball coaches.

Her accomplishments include being named the 2013 Coach of the Year by the Northwest Indiana Times and induction into the 2011 Illinois Coaches Association Softball Hall of Fame. She is also a member of the National Federation of Coaches Association’s 500th Winning Victory Club.

Beyond the softball field, Coach G has made a lasting difference in the lives of countless students through her leadership, mentorship, and dedication to Crete-Monee High School. As a longtime member of the Crete-Monee Athletic Boosters, she has continued to support student-athletes and school programs long after her coaching career ended.

Athletic Director John Konecki and Superintendent Dr. Kara Coglianese spoke during the ceremony about Coach G’s influence on the district and the many lives she has impacted both on and off the field. Coach G herself also shared remarks reflecting on her career and highlighting the opportunities the new field will provide for generations to come.

The evening brought together family members, friends, former students and athletes, current and former board members, booster club members, and community supporters to celebrate Coach G’s contributions to Crete-Monee High School and the broader district community.
