On April 2, 2025, four outstanding students from Crete-Monee High School’s Emerging Leaders Civic Engagement Program had the unique opportunity to attend Lobby Day at the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield. Amiyah Rice, Fausiat Azeez, Malachi Cliff, and Taylor Stua participated in this enriching civic experience, representing our school district with pride.
The day began with an exciting tour of the Governor's Mansion, where students explored the historic building and learned about Illinois' political history. Following the tour, they visited the offices of Senators Patrick Joyce and Michael Hastings, engaging in meaningful conversations and gaining valuable insights into the legislative process.
After a networking lunch in the Stratton Cafeteria with other members of Congress, the students continued their journey with a tour of the Lieutenant Governor's office, followed by a visit to the House of Representatives chambers. The highlight of the day was meeting Senate President Don Harmon, who shared his perspective on leadership, as well as touring the office of Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias.
Throughout the day, our Emerging Leaders asked thoughtful questions, voiced their opinions on important issues, and collected business cards from key political figures. They even captured memorable photos to document their experience.
We are thrilled to see how this program is positively impacting the lives of our students and look forward to its continued growth and development. This opportunity not only fosters leadership skills but also strengthens the connection between our school district and the communities we serve.
